BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 10. Countries must
cooperate in establishing new national climate commitments, UN
Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed during a roundtable
discussion titled "Troika Roadmap to the '1.5 Mission:
Strengthening International Cooperation" held as part of Pre-COP29
in Baku today, Trend reports.
She pointed out the necessity of fulfilling commitments made at
COP29.
"We must provide the necessary support regarding climate change.
Working daily with governments, we're assisting countries in
developing new plans. This will also help increase investments.
Some countries lack the capacity to implement their planned
initiatives. The primary goal of the UN is to support such
countries and create conditions for partnership. Countries must
collaborate in establishing new national commitments. Time is
running out, and urgent steps must be taken. We now need a global
dialogue to ensure that every voice is heard. COP29 will
demonstrate the extent to which we are united. The world needs such
events," she added.
The preliminary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC),
known as PreCOP29, has commenced in Baku.
PreCOP29 carries the theme "Raising Ambitions and Ensuring
Action".
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was
made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last
year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive
about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an
agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992
to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
COP-the Conference of the Parties-is the highest legislative body
overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on
Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the
Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held
annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's
Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
