China’s number of AI patents reach 378,000 by end of last year


(MENAFN) According to a report by a Beijing-based state news agency on Monday, China’s number of artificial intelligence (AI) patents reached 378,000 by the end of 2023. This significant figure highlights China’s growing dominance and innovation in the AI sector. The growth rate of AI patents in China is notably impressive, with Ge Shu, deputy commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), stating that it is "1.4 times higher than the global average." This indicates China's rapid advancement and leadership in AI technology.

Ge Shu also reported that the number of AI invention patents in China surged by 40 percent on an annual basis. This sharp increase reflects the country's aggressive push to lead in AI research and development. In addition to AI patents, Ge highlighted that invention patents in China’s core digital economy industries totaled 406,000 in 2023. These patents represented 45 percent of all invention patents granted in the country last year, showcasing the significant role of digital technologies in China's innovation landscape.

The substantial number of patents in digital economy sectors also correlates with broader economic impacts. Ge noted that these technological innovations are contributing to China's economic growth, with the digital economy accounting for 10 percent of the nation's GDP. This integration of technology into the economy underscores the importance of innovation in driving economic development.

Furthermore, Ge pointed out that the impact of these technological advancements is evident in China's economic performance. Over the past five years, the country has experienced a 21 percent annual boost in its average growth rate, illustrating how technological progress is fueling broader economic gains. This growth underscores the critical role that technological innovation plays in China’s economic strategy and development.
