China issues caution to Philippines over ‘arms race’ over US missiles

(MENAFN) China has issued a stern warning to the Philippines regarding the potential deployment of United States intermediate-range missile systems within its territory, cautioning that such a move could spark an "arms race" in the region. The warning was delivered by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a meeting with his Philippine counterpart, Enrique Manalo, on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi expressed significant concern about the impact of hosting United States missile systems, stating that it could exacerbate tensions and lead to increased regional conflict. He criticized the Philippines for what he described as repeated violations of bilateral agreements and commitments, which have further strained relations between the two nations. The potential deployment of these intermediate-range missiles is particularly troubling for China, according to Wang.

“If the Philippines proceeds with the introduction of United States intermediate-range missile systems, it will heighten regional tensions and provoke an arms race,” Wang warned. He emphasized that such developments are contrary to the interests and desires of the Filipino people.

In response to recent geopolitical developments, the United States had deployed Typhon launchers, capable of firing Standard SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles, to the Philippines in April. However, these systems have not been used in live-fire exercises and are scheduled to be withdrawn in the coming months, according to an announcement from Manila earlier this month.

Wang Yi’s comments come at a time when both Beijing and Manila have made efforts to ease tensions in the South China Sea, a strategically vital waterway contested by multiple countries. Despite these efforts to manage disputes and improve relations, the potential deployment of United States missiles continues to pose a significant challenge to regional stability.

As the situation develops, the diplomatic exchange between China and the Philippines will be closely watched for its implications on regional security and international relations.
