New York: The United Nations (UN) launched on Thursday a global call to action to reduce the consequences of rising temperatures.

In his statements, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday witnessed breaking global temperature records, according to data issued by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Guterres warned that extreme temperatures are now an ongoing global issue and not isolated incidents.

The heat wave has led to dire consequences.

The Secretary-General said that extreme heat tears economies apart, widens inequality and undermines sustainable development goals, adding, "The Earth is getting hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere."

He pointed out that extreme heat is exacerbated by climate change caused by human activities, with heat-related deaths estimated at about half a million annually, far exceeding the impact of tropical cyclones.

The Secretary-Generals Global Call for Extreme Heat focuses on four key areas: protecting the most vulnerable populations, enhancing worker safety against heat-related risks, strengthening resilience through data-driven heat action plans, and limiting temperature rise to 1.5 C by phasing out fossil fuels and increasing investment in renewable energy.
