(MENAFN) In a significant development, the Tuapse oil refinery on Russia's Black Sea coast, owned by the oil major Rosneft, sustained damage following a Ukrainian drone attack overnight. Officials from the Krasnodar region confirmed this incident on Monday. According to a statement from the regional administration on Telegram, debris from a drone that was shot down by Russian defenses caused a fire at the refinery, which was subsequently contained. Fortunately, the administration reported that there were no injuries resulting from this accident. However, details regarding whether the refinery was operational at the time of the attack or the extent of the damage remain unclear.
The Russian Defense Ministry provided additional context, revealing that their air defense systems had intercepted and destroyed a total of 75 drones launched by Ukraine. Among these, eight were specifically targeted near Tuapse. The Tuapse refinery has been a recurrent target of Ukrainian air strikes since the onset of Russia's military actions against Kyiv in 2022. On the morning of the attack, Russian news channels Shot and Mash shared on Telegram that multiple explosions were heard near the refinery, adding to the tension in the area.
Further reports from the Defense Ministry highlighted that, in addition to the Tuapse incident, 47 drones were shot down over the Rostov region in southwestern Russia, 17 over the Black and Azov seas, and another eight over the Krasnodar region, where Tuapse is located. Drones were also intercepted over Belgorod, Voronezh, and Smolensk. Rostov Region Governor Vasily Golubev confirmed on Telegram that there were no casualties or serious damage resulting from these attacks. This wave of drone strikes underscores the ongoing and escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with significant impacts on critical infrastructure and regional stability.
