Germany urges citizens to avoid traveling to Bangladesh amid severe civil unrest

(MENAFN) On Sunday, the German foreign Ministry issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid traveling to Bangladesh due to severe civil unrest in the country. The ministry's website highlighted the current instability, including a curfew and significant restrictions on internet and mobile data services. The advisory warned that further restrictions and a worsening of the situation are anticipated.

The unrest in Bangladesh, sparked by student protests over civil service hiring rules, has escalated into the most severe civil disorder the country has faced in years. The violence has resulted in the deaths of 155 individuals and widespread destruction, particularly in the capital city of Dhaka. In response to the turmoil, soldiers have been deployed to various cities to restore order after riot police were unable to control the situation. Additionally, the country has been experiencing a nationwide internet blackout since Thursday, which has severely hampered the flow of information both within and outside the country.

On the same day, the US State Department also issued a warning to Americans, advising against travel to Bangladesh. The department announced that it would begin evacuating some diplomats and their families from the country as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi Supreme Court attempted to address the unrest by revising the contentious hiring quotas, but the changes did not satisfy the protesting university student leaders. The ongoing situation continues to evolve, with the potential for further instability and restrictions.
