California governor backs Kamala Harris as Democratic presidential nominee

(MENAFN) California Governor Gavin Newsom has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, following President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday. In a statement posted on X, Newsom praised Harris, describing her as "Tough. Fearless. Tenacious." He emphasized that with the future of democracy at stake, Harris is best positioned to challenge former President Donald trump and lead the country in a more positive direction. Newsom's endorsement reflects a significant shift in the Democratic field, as Biden's exit opens the path for Harris to become the party's nominee.

This development came after Biden announced his decision to drop out of the presidential race, expressing his support for Harris. In his announcement, Biden, who has faced criticism following a poor performance in a recent debate against Trump, stated that it has been "the greatest honor" of his life to serve as president. Despite his initial intention to seek reelection, Biden acknowledged in a letter posted on social media that stepping down was in the best interest of both his party and the country. He affirmed his commitment to focusing on his duties as President for the remainder of his term.

In addition to Newsom's endorsement, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also voiced his support for Harris. Shapiro pledged to do everything in his power to help elect Harris as the 47th President of the United States. The shift in support reflects the Democratic Party's realignment as it adapts to Biden's withdrawal and sets the stage for Harris to take the lead in the upcoming election.
