IOS18 update helps iPhone users prevent premature battery damage

(MENAFN) Apple has invested significant effort into helping Iphone users prevent premature battery damage, a longstanding issue for the device. One major solution Apple has implemented is to prevent overcharging.

Overcharging lithium-ion batteries can cause metallic lithium to form inside the cell, creating a fire hazard. By limiting the charge to 80 percent, Apple reduces the risk of such battery damage.

In iOS13, Apple introduced Optimized Battery Charging, a feature designed to extend battery life by minimizing the time the battery remains fully charged. This technology utilizes on-device machine learning to learn the user's daily charging habits, maintaining the charge at 80 percent and only completing it to 100 percent shortly before the user typically unplugs their phone.

With iOS17, Apple introduced an 80 percent charging limit option, which only resumes charging when the battery level drops to 75 percent. Occasionally, the battery is charged to 100 percent to ensure accurate battery status and capacity information.

In iOS18, the operating system adopts a more proactive approach to improving battery life by recommending specific charging limits to users through notifications. The latest iOS offers new charging options of 85 percent, 90 percent, and 95 percent for users to select from. These recommendations can also be found in the Settings app under Battery, then Charging. For instance, the iOS 18 beta may suggest setting the battery charge limit to a particular percentage via highlighted green text.
