Cameroon launches new HIV testing algorithm after WHO recommendations

(MENAFN) Cameroon has recently launched a new HIV testing algorithm following recommendations from the World health Organization (WHO). Minister of Public Health Manaouda Malachie announced during a press conference in Yaounde that the new algorithm mandates three consecutive reactive tests for anyone newly diagnosed as HIV-positive within healthcare facilities and community organizations.

Describing this initiative as a significant step towards achieving the goal of eliminating the HIV pandemic by 2030, Minister Manaouda emphasized the importance of rigorous testing protocols to ensure accurate diagnoses and prompt initiation of treatment.

Initially, the new HIV testing algorithm will be piloted and evaluated in four regions of Cameroon: Center, South, Littoral, and West. Following this phase, the health ministry plans to expand implementation across the entire country. This phased approach aims to optimize testing procedures and ensure effective integration into Cameroon's healthcare system.

Manaouda reaffirmed Cameroon's commitment to combatting HIV/AIDS, noting that approximately 500,000 people are currently living with the disease in the country. This initiative aligns with global efforts to enhance HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, reflecting Cameroon's proactive stance in addressing public health challenges.

As of 2022, Cameroon's population, according to World Bank data, exceeds 27.9 million people, underscoring the scale of healthcare interventions needed to manage and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS nationwide.
