Ukraine reacts to Hungary`s ceasefire suggestion

(MENAFN) Ukraine has rebuffed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's recent proposal for a ceasefire in its ongoing conflict with Russia, according to statements made by Igor Zhovkva, deputy chief of staff to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Orban, during his first visit to Ukraine in over a decade, raised the idea of a "quick ceasefire" to expedite peace negotiations following his meeting with President Zelensky in Kiev on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Zhovkva clarified Ukraine's stance, emphasizing that while Orban's suggestion was noted, it aligns with similar proposals from other nations and does not alter Kiev's clear and well-established position. Ukraine insists that any ceasefire must be considered within the framework of Zelensky's comprehensive "peace formula," first presented in late 2022. This formula outlines ten points, including demands for a complete Russian withdrawal from territories claimed by Ukraine, reparations, and adherence to international legal processes for war crimes.

In response to Ukraine's peace terms, Moscow has staunchly rejected Zelensky's demands as impractical and, in the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin, "ridiculous." Putin has countered with his own conditions for initiating ceasefire discussions, which include a full Ukrainian retreat from regions that have expressed a desire to join Russia and binding assurances that Ukraine will never seek NATO membership.

The diplomatic exchanges underscore the complex negotiations and deep-seated geopolitical tensions surrounding the conflict, highlighting the challenges and differing perspectives as both sides navigate towards a potential resolution.
