US inks agreement with Panama to tackle irregular migration

(MENAFN) On Monday, the United States and Panama solidified their collaboration with the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at combating migrant smuggling through the Darien Gap, a challenging stretch of 165 miles (265 kilometers) of swampy jungle between Panama and Colombia. This corridor has been heavily trafficked by migrants seeking to reach the United States via Central America and Mexico.

The memorandum underscores efforts to reduce irregular migration by facilitating the swift, safe, and humane repatriation of migrants who lack legal grounds to stay in Panama. According to Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, this initiative aims to deter irregular migration and disrupt illicit smuggling networks that exploit vulnerable migrants.

US President Joe Biden also extended congratulations to Jose Raul Mulino on his inauguration as the president of Panama, emphasizing the longstanding and robust bilateral ties between the two nations. Biden expressed his commitment to advancing good governance, fostering inclusive economic growth, and addressing migration issues in partnership with Panama.

During his campaign, President Mulino pledged to address the challenges posed by the Darien Gap, signaling a proactive stance on controlling migration flows through Central America. The collaborative efforts between the US and Panama aim to enhance regional stability, mitigate humanitarian challenges, and uphold lawful migration practices.

As both nations continue to work together, the focus remains on implementing effective strategies to manage migration flows while respecting human rights and promoting regional security and prosperity.
