National Rally set for record breaking election triumph in France

(MENAFN) In a dramatic turn of events, France's right-wing National Rally (RN) appears poised to secure a historic victory in the first round of the country’s snap parliamentary elections, as indicated by exit polls released on Sunday. The projected outcome signals a significant setback for President Emmanuel macron and his centrist Together coalition, prompting widespread analysis and anticipation ahead of the decisive second round.

President Macron called for early elections following disappointing results for his Renaissance Party in the recent European Parliament elections, where the RN under the leadership of Jordan Bardella emerged as France’s leading delegation. Now, exit polls from Ipsos and Talan suggest the RN and its allied factions have captured the lead with 33.2percent of the vote, followed closely by the left-wing New Popular Front bloc at 28.1percent. Macron’s coalition trails in third place with 21percent of the projected vote share.

The voter turnout for this election has been remarkable, estimated at 65.5percent – the highest seen in France in four decades, underscoring the significance and intensity of public engagement in this electoral cycle.

Projections by Radio France Internationale (RFI) paint a picture of potential parliamentary dominance for the RN, with estimates ranging between 230 to 280 seats in the 577-member National Assembly. Meanwhile, Macron’s bloc is expected to secure between 70 to 100 seats, reflecting a stark political realignment in French legislative dynamics.

The RN’s strong showing in the first round has energized supporters, with party leaders urging continued mobilization for the upcoming second round of voting scheduled for July 7. Marine Le Pen, the influential figurehead of RN who heads its parliamentary faction, expressed optimism tempered with caution, emphasizing the need for an outright majority to influence the appointment of Jordan Bardella as prime minister.

As France braces for a crucial second round, the political landscape is set for further upheaval, potentially reshaping the balance of power in Paris and influencing the trajectory of Macron's presidency amidst growing public discontent and shifting electoral allegiances.
