Italian Premier criticizes EU backroom deals for EU jobs

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly criticized what she described as "surreal" backroom deals within the European Union to appoint top positions without regard for voter sentiments. Meloni's remarks come amidst reports that the three main Political groups in the European Parliament, predominantly centrist, have agreed on a plan to fill key European Union leadership roles.

Following significant electoral shifts favoring right-wing parties across the bloc in recent European Parliament elections, Meloni expressed dismay that the agreed-upon appointments, including Ursula von der Leyen's expected return as European Commission president, were made without meaningful consideration of voter signals. According to the reported arrangement, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is slated to replace Spain's Josep Borrell as the European Union 's new foreign policy chief, while former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa would take over the presidency of the European Council.

Speaking before the Italian parliament, Meloni highlighted Italy's purported exclusion from discussions regarding these leadership appointments, which were reportedly endorsed by leaders from France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Greece, and the Netherlands. The appointments are set to be officially presented for approval at an European Union leaders' summit in Brussels.

Meloni's criticism underscores broader concerns over transparency and democratic accountability within the European Union's decision-making processes, particularly in light of electoral outcomes that have signaled a significant shift in political dynamics across member states. As the European Union prepares to formalize these appointments, the implications of such backroom agreements on the bloc's governance and public trust remain subjects of contentious debate.
