ICC releases detention warrant for Shoigu, Gerasimov

(MENAFN) The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for former Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and current Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, alleging their involvement in war crimes during the ongoing Ukraine conflict. These warrants, announced by the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber II, accuse Shoigu and Gerasimov of directing attacks on civilian targets and causing excessive harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure between October 2022 and March 2023.

Sergey Shoigu, who served as Russia's defense minister from 2012 until his recent reassignment to the Security Council, and Valery Gerasimov, in his role since 2012, are both implicated in these charges. The ICC contends that there is substantial evidence supporting these allegations, asserting that both men bear individual criminal responsibility for their actions.

In response, Russia, which does not recognize the ICC's jurisdiction as it is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, dismissed the warrants as invalid. The Russian Security Council's press office labeled the ICC's actions as part of what it termed the "West's hybrid war" against Russia, emphasizing that the court's jurisdiction does not extend to Russian officials.

The issuance of these arrest warrants adds a significant legal dimension to the international scrutiny surrounding Russia's military actions in Ukraine, further complicating diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. As tensions persist, the global community continues to monitor the developments and implications of the ICC's latest move on international justice and accountability in conflict zones.
