Report shows historic amount of labor strikes conducted in Germany in 2023

(MENAFN) Germany experienced a significant rise in industrial actions and labor disputes throughout 2023, marking a notable departure from previous years, according to a recent report from the Institute of Economic and Social Sciences (WSI).

The report highlighted that Germany recorded a total of 312 labor disputes in 2023, compared to 225 in the previous year. These disputes resulted in the equivalent of 1,527,000 working days lost due to strikes, representing a doubling from the year before. Notably, some of the longest strikes endured for 123 and 180 days, underscoring the depth of discontent among workers.

The surge in strikes last seen at this level in 2015 has earned Germany the reputation of a "strike republic" for 2023, the report noted, emphasizing the widespread impact of these industrial actions on daily life. Sectors heavily affected included public transportation, postal services, and airport and railway operations.

According to the WSI, the primary drivers behind this increase in labor disputes were high inflation rates and resulting wage losses. The report highlighted that conflicts over how inflation costs are shared between employers and employees were central to many of these disputes. Additionally, shifts in the labor market dynamics, which empowered employees to demand better pay and working conditions, also contributed to the heightened level of strikes.

Looking ahead, the WSI cautioned that 2024 is shaping up to be another intense year for labor disputes in Germany, underscoring ongoing tensions and challenges within the country's labor landscape.
