Kenyan Leader withdraws 2024-2025 budget amid violent protests

(MENAFN) Kenyan President William Ruto made a decisive announcement to withdraw the draft 2024-2025 budget following violent protests across the country, which resulted in tragic casualties and significant property damage. The protests erupted in response to the proposed budget, which included tax hikes, prompting widespread public discontent and unrest.

In his address following the demonstrations that claimed the lives of 22 individuals, as reported by Kenya's official human rights body, President Ruto acknowledged the vehement opposition from the Kenyan populace to the Finance Bill of 2024. He declared his decision not to sign the bill into law, emphasizing that it will be withdrawn to prevent further unrest and seek consensus through consultations.

President Ruto underscored the need for national dialogue and consensus-building moving forward, particularly on critical issues such as debt management and public finance. He expressed his intention to engage directly with the country's youth and citizens to address their concerns and seek constructive solutions together.

The approval of the budget by Parliament, dominated by the ruling party, had ignited public outrage, leading to escalated protests in Nairobi and other parts of the country. Demonstrators, in a historic turn of events, breached Parliament premises, resulting in looting and arson.

Responding to the escalating violence, the Kenyan Parliament convened a special session to authorize the deployment of the military to safeguard essential infrastructure and support law enforcement in quelling the unrest. The deployment decision came after demonstrators stormed Parliament, setting parts of the building ablaze, in unprecedented unrest in Kenya's recent history.

President Ruto's withdrawal of the budget underscores the gravity of public discontent and the government's commitment to addressing grievances through dialogue and inclusive decision-making. The country now faces a crucial period of reconciliation and reform as it navigates the aftermath of the violent protests and works towards a consensus on fiscal policies that resonate with the aspirations of its citizens.
