Russia Threatened Retaliation Against US Over Ukraine's Attack On Crimea
Russia summoned the US ambassador in Moscow, stating it would retaliate against Ukraine's use of American long-range missiles in the recent attack on Sevastopol.
Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, reported that two children were among the casualties in Ukraine's strike on Sevastopol. Russia claims Ukraine used the ATACMS missile system supplied by Washington, with alleged US military collaboration in intelligence gathering.
In response, Russia's Foreign Ministry summoned the US ambassador, warning of retaliatory measures against Washington's perceived role in escalating tensions with Russia.
Reuters reported this as the first direct accusation by Russia against the US of an attack on Russian soil.
Most countries, including the US, do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia following Moscow's annexation of the peninsula in 2014.
In recent months, tensions between Russia and Ukraine have escalated significantly, exacerbated by Western support for Ukraine. NATO countries, including the United States and European allies, have provided military aid and political backing to Ukraine in its conflict with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
This support has been viewed by Moscow as interference in its sphere of influence and has contributed to heightened tensions in the region.
