Washington expresses opposition to continued Israeli army aid

(MENAFN) In a significant press briefing, the United States State Department voiced its strong opposition to the ongoing Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip. Spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the adverse effects these actions have on Gaza's civilian population, stating, "This is clearly harmful to Gazans who want to return to their lives."

Miller elaborated on the broader implications of continued military action, asserting that it weakens Israel's strategic position, complicates conflict resolution in the north, and exacerbates instability in the West Bank. Despite these reservations, Miller confirmed that the United States continues to fulfill Israel's requests for military aid, although he acknowledged the suspension of a shipment of heavy bombs. He also characterized Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's remarks regarding US aid as puzzling.

The State Department underscored Secretary Antony Blinken's communication with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, emphasizing the urgent need for Israel to formulate a strong and realistic plan for governing Gaza once the conflict concludes. During his visit to Washington, Gallant committed to prioritizing the return of "hostages held" in Gaza and enhancing cooperation with the United States amid tense bilateral relations.

In Washington, Gallant held discussions with CIA Director Bill Burns, who plays a crucial role in the negotiations for the hostages' release. He then engaged in talks with Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Before these meetings, Gallant reaffirmed Israel's unwavering commitment to securing the return of all hostages, declaring, "Israel's primary obligation is to return the hostages, without exception, to their families and their homes."

President Joe Biden, on May 31, proposed a ceasefire plan for Gaza that included the partial release of hostages. These discussions aim to resolve the conflict triggered by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7. Gallant emphasized Israel's relentless efforts to ensure the hostages' safe return.
