(MENAFN) Two individuals tragically lost their lives, and nine others sustained injuries in a devastating head-on collision involving two trains in San Bernardo, near Santiago, as reported by the State Railway Company (EFE) on Thursday. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday when a test train collided with a cargo train operated by the private rail company Fepasa on the main railway line in the area, according to EFE sources.

The collision resulted in the fatalities of two workers who were onboard the cargo train at the time. EFE further stated that several personnel aboard the test train suffered injuries of varying severity and are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby healthcare facility. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the nine individuals are not considered life-threatening.

Following the tragic accident, Chilean Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Munoz, emphasized the urgent need to thoroughly investigate the incident to determine its exact causes. Munoz underscored the importance of implementing necessary measures to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of the country's railway systems.
