Poll shows Macron`s approval rating decreases

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel macron has seen his approval ratings plummet to their lowest levels in recent years, according to a report by French business daily Les Echos, citing results from a recent opinion poll. The survey, conducted by French research firm Elabe, was carried out following Macron's decision to dissolve the national parliament and call for snap elections subsequent to his party's defeat in the European Parliament elections.

Les Echos reported that Macron's approval rating has now reached its lowest point since the beginning of his second five-year term in May 2022. The president's approval has dropped by five percentage points, standing at 24percentin the latest poll. This decline places Macron's popularity just one point above the nadir of 23percentrecorded during the height of the 'Yellow Vest' crisis in December 2018, a period marked by widespread protests across France against Macron's policies, particularly the green tax on fuel.

According to the survey, which polled 1,502 adults online on Tuesday and Wednesday, Macron's approval ratings have seen significant declines across various demographics. Among executives, his approval dropped by 12 points to 33 percent, while among intermediate professions, it fell by two points to 20 percent. Retirees' approval also decreased by four points to 26 percent.

Bernard Sananes, president of Elabe, noted that the sharp decline in Macron's approval ratings is not unexpected following such a substantial electoral setback. Sananes emphasized that economic concerns remain pivotal among the public, alongside apprehensions regarding the political instability triggered by Macron's decision to dissolve the National Assembly.

Macron's announcement of snap elections for France's lower house of parliament, scheduled for June 30 and July 7, has added to the political turbulence. The move followed the defeat of Macron's party in the European Parliament elections, prompting speculation and concerns among the electorate about the future direction of French governance amidst ongoing economic challenges.

The significant drop in Macron's approval ratings underscores the challenging landscape facing the French president as he navigates political headwinds and strives to regain public trust ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
