Egypt discusses expansion of LNG infrastructure in Ain Sokhna Port

(MENAFN) The Egyptian Ministry of petroleum has announced plans to potentially expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure at the Ain Sokhna port by adding another floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). In a statement, the ministry highlighted ongoing studies aimed at evaluating the feasibility of integrating a new FSRU to bolster storage and gasification capabilities at Ain Sokhna. Additionally, there is consideration of utilizing existing liquefaction facilities in the Damietta and Idku regions in reverse to support these efforts.

This strategic move comes amidst efforts to enhance Egypt's capacity to meet rising energy demands, particularly during peak periods such as the summer months. Recent reports indicated that the Egyptian government had already secured a tender for the purchase of 17 LNG shipments scheduled for delivery over the summer, underscoring the country's proactive stance in ensuring energy security.

Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, aims to procure between 15 to 20 additional LNG shipments to adequately address the heightened energy requirements anticipated during the upcoming months. This initiative reflects Egypt's commitment to diversifying its energy sources and bolstering its infrastructure to sustain economic growth and meet domestic energy needs effectively.

The expansion plans at Ain Sokhna and potential utilization of existing facilities in Damietta and Idku signify significant steps towards reinforcing Egypt's position as a key player in the global LNG market while fortifying its energy resilience amid increasing demand fluctuations and regional dynamics.
