India and the United States on Monday pledged to take action to address obstacles hindering bilateral strategic cooperation in trade, technology, and industrial sectors, according to a joint statement.

The commitment was made during a meeting between the two countries' national security advisers, Ajit Doval and Jake Sullivan, as part of Sullivan's two-day visit to New Delhi.

The U.S. and India are strengthening strategic ties amid shared concerns over China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region, despite India maintaining close relations with Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Doval and Sullivan co-chaired the second meeting of the India-U.S. Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, launched in January 2023.

According to the statement, they "resolved to prevent the leakage of sensitive and dual-use technologies to countries of concern," though no specific nations were named.

A new strategic semiconductor partnership between U.S. and Indian companies was announced, focused on precision-guided ammunition and other national security electronics platforms.

The two sides also agreed to co-invest in lithium and rare earth mineral projects in South America and Africa, respectively, 'to diversify critical mineral supply chains.'

They committed to soon finalising a bilateral critical minerals pact covering graphite, gallium, and germanium.

Discussions encompassed potential co-production of land warfare systems, as well as joint production of General Electric fighter jet engines by India's Hindustan Aeronautics, building on India's 2022 announcement to purchase 31 MQ-9B drones from General Atomic during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Washington.

The visit marks the first by a high-ranking U.S. official since Modi secured a new term with allied support.

Modi met U.S. President Joe Biden last week on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy.
