Media reports Israel, Hamas don not consent on American-supported ceasefire

(MENAFN) Israeli and Hamas officials are at odds over a United States-supported plan aimed at halting the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israeli representatives have accused Hamas of rejecting a three-phase ceasefire plan proposed by the United States, which also includes the release of hostages still held in Gaza. This claim comes after Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group issued their response to the United States draft.

In late May, the United States announced that Israel had agreed to the plan, which detailed steps for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. However, following the receipt of Hamas's response via a mediator, an anonymous Israeli official told the Times of Israel that Hamas had rejected President Biden's proposal for the release of hostages. Another unnamed Israeli official quoted by Reuters stated that Hamas had altered all major and critical aspects of the potential agreement.

Contrarily, Hamas has argued that it merely reiterated its prior stance on the necessity for a complete cessation of hostilities. Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan explained to the Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen that their response reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Hamdan emphasized that Hamas could not compromise on the rights of its people under any circumstances.

Reports from CNN indicate that Hamas suggested amendments to the Israeli proposal, including a specific timeline for the ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from Gaza.

The situation drew international attention, leading to the United Nations Security Council passing a resolution on Monday that urged both parties to implement the proposed ceasefire "without delay and without condition." This ongoing disagreement highlights the persistent tensions and the complex nature of achieving peace in the region.
