UK contemplates sending asylum seekers to Africa in July

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is set to commence the deportation of asylum seekers who are in the country illegally to Rwanda starting from July 23, as reported by Reuters citing a government lawyer. This decision comes following the approval of the Safety of Rwanda Bill by the United Kingdom Parliament in April, which aims to facilitate the deportation process by preventing legal challenges.

The legislation seeks to address previous obstacles faced by the United Kingdom government in enforcing an agreement with Rwanda for the processing of asylum claims. Legal challenges mounted by organizations like Asylum Aid have delayed the implementation of this agreement, prompting the government to take legislative action.

Documents submitted to the London High Court reveal the government's intention to initiate deportation flights to Rwanda on July 23, 2024. This move signifies a significant step forward in the United Kingdom's efforts to address illegal immigration and streamline its asylum system.

However, the deportation scheme has sparked controversy and faced criticism from various quarters. Critics argue that the policy unfairly targets vulnerable asylum seekers and raises concerns about their safety and well-being upon arrival in Rwanda. Additionally, the legality and ethical implications of deporting individuals to countries where their safety may be compromised have been called into question.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party has championed the deportation policy, positioning it as a key component of their immigration agenda. However, the success of the scheme is contingent upon the outcome of the upcoming election, with Sunak indicating that deportation flights will not proceed before Britons cast their votes on July 4.

As legal challenges and public debate continue to surround the United Kingdom's deportation plans, the government faces pressure to ensure that its immigration policies uphold human rights standards and address the complex realities faced by asylum seekers fleeing persecution and violence.
