Serbia`s ruling party accomplishes great win in regional elections

(MENAFN) The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) led by Prime Minister Milos Vucevic has secured a resounding victory in 85 out of 89 towns and municipalities in local elections, including a rerun vote in Belgrade. Vucevic announced the party's success, highlighting their "pure and convincing victory" in most voting locations. The preliminary results of the elections are expected to be released by Serbia's election commission on Monday evening.

Vucevic, along with President Aleksandar Vucic, celebrated the party's triumph, emphasizing their opposition to western sanctions against Russia. However, the SNS faced challenges in only four locations, predominantly areas with ethnic Hungarian and Bosniak populations.

The voter turnout varied across districts, ranging from 33 percent to 70 percent, reflecting the varying levels of civic engagement. Despite the overall success of the ruling party, Vucevic condemned incidents of violence and disruption during the electoral process. He accused pro-Western opposition members of breaking into SNS call centers, impeding citizens from voting, and assaulting election commission members and journalists.

The prime minister emphasized that such actions are unacceptable in democratic societies and warned of potential sanctions against those responsible. The outcome of the local elections solidifies the SNS's grip on power, maintaining their stronghold in Serbian politics since 2012.
