Florida's Board of Governors prohibits state spending on DEI program across universities

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Florida's Board of Governors made a significant decision to prohibit state spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across all public universities in the state.

This move follows a broader trend of actions aimed at restricting DEI spending in higher education institutions in the United States. Notable universities like the University of Florida, Florida State University, and Florida International University are among those affected by this decision.

The recent vote aligns public universities with legislation signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in May 2023, which aimed to defund DEI programs at state universities and colleges.

As a result, state and federal funds cannot be used by a state university to endorse, support, or sustain any programs or campus activities advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion, or engaging in political or social activism. The 17-member board, acting as the governing body for the State University System of Florida, outlined these restrictions.

This decision comes on the heels of a similar move by Florida's Board of Education last week, which approved rules limiting public funding for DEI programs in public colleges.

It reflects a broader national trend where DEI programs in universities are increasingly becoming targets for policy changes and funding restrictions.
