(MENAFN) Senegalese authorities announced their intention to acquire the personal belongings of their first leader, Leopold Sedar Senghor, at an auction scheduled in France for Saturday. This decision has led to the postponement of the auction event.
Leader Macky Sall has asked that the culture minister, as well as the Embassy Senegal in Paris, hold “appropriate discussions” with the auctioneer, as reported by an African news agency.
“My seller and I perfectly understand the excitement caused by this sale among the Senegalese and... we therefore decided to postpone the sale,” auctioneer Solene Laine informed a news agency on Saturday.
Government officials are set to engage in negotiations over the next few weeks. Nevertheless, if no agreement is reached between Senegal and the company, it has been reported that the auction will be rescheduled for December.
An auction house in the city of Caen had planned to auction Leopold Sedar Senghor's property, which included war medals and jewelry. These items were consigned to the auction firm by an undisclosed private seller, as indicated on the company's website, “these lots from the estate of Leopold Sedar Senghor come from a private individual.”
Apart from serving as the inaugural president of Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor was a notable poet, writer, and professor. He held the presidency of the West African nation for two decades following its attainment of independence from France in 1960. Subsequently, he retired to France, where he passed away at the age of 95 in 2001.
