Previous-Trump attorney pleads guilty in Georgia election meddling lawsuit

(MENAFN) In a significant development, former trump lawyer Sidney Powell has entered into a plea deal with Fulton County prosecutors on charges related to election interference in the state of Georgia. Powell, along with 18 Political allies, faced allegations of conspiring to interfere with election duties during the 2020 election. The plea deal involves Powell pleading guilty to six misdemeanor counts and accepting a six-year probation period, coupled with a USD6,000 fine.

Additionally, she is required to pen a letter of apology to the state and its residents, and crucially, testify against her co-defendants, including her former client, Donald Trump.

Initially charged under a racketeering statute typically reserved for organized crime cases, Powell was accused of unauthorized access, tampering, and data theft from voting machines supplied by Dominion Voting Systems in rural Coffee County, Georgia. Prosecutors argued that Powell collaborated with co-defendant Scott Graham Hall, a bail bondsman, and the computer forensics company SullivanStrickler to duplicate data and software from Dominion voting machines in Coffee County. The intention was to transmit this information to another attorney on the Trump team, ostensibly to demonstrate electoral manipulation in favor of Joe Biden. Hall, who pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor charges the previous month, has also committed to testifying against his co-defendants.

Jury selection for the trial, which included Powell and fellow lawyer Kenneth Chesebro, was slated to commence the following Friday, with the trial's official commencement set for the following Monday. In light of Powell's plea deal, Chesebro is now anticipated to stand trial individually. However, sources indicate that prosecutors are contemplating extending a plea offer to him as well. This development underscores the evolving dynamics of this high-profile legal case, shedding light on the intricate web of events surrounding the 2020 election and the subsequent legal proceedings.
