(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia is set to become an active participant in global ecological governance as the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) has been granted a significant role in the environmental activities of the United Nations (UN). In a press note released by KAPSARC, it was announced that the think tank will now have the opportunity to engage in global dialogues on energy, climate, and the environment, while also attaining observer status within the UN Environment Program.
With its newfound place in the UN, KAPSARC will be able to contribute to international discussions on critical issues such as climate change. Building upon its existing accreditation by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the center will have the capacity to provide evidence-based reporting and offer policy recommendations, particularly during this crucial phase of climate change conversations.
Brian Efird, the Director of Strategic Partnerships at KAPSARC, emphasized the significance of this accreditation, stating that it grants the center "the privilege of receiving unedited working documents of the UN Environment Assembly simultaneously with the Committee of the Permanent Representatives." This allows KAPSARC to stay informed about the latest developments and contribute effectively to the discussions. Furthermore, KAPSARC now has the ability to submit written contributions, actively participate in official UNEA meetings, and provide valuable oral and written inputs during these sessions.
This new role for KAPSARC reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to global environmental stewardship and its desire to actively contribute to the formulation of policies and initiatives related to energy, climate, and the environment.
