Lose Angeles agrees to use police robot dogs

(MENAFN) The Los Angeles city council has approved the utilization of a robotic “dog” device by the domestic police department, in spite of objections from citizens and some unorthodox council members. New York earlier revealed a parallel tech and received major public disapproval.

City decisionmakers voted 8-4 on Tuesday to support a donation of a “Quadruped Unmanned Ground Vehicle” to the LAPD from the non-profit Los Angeles Police Foundation, which provided the USD277,000-robot to the police for free.

Designed and produced by Boston Dynamics, the robotic dog can navigate topography and constructions autonomously, and can be fortified with a extensive range of surveillance equipment, sensors and other “payloads.” However, for law enforcement, it is mostly planned for use in threatening circumstances that might put policemen at risk, performing as an additional set of eyes and ears for the department.
