FAO representative: Increasing fertilizer costs to worsen food issues

(MENAFN) Increasing fertilizer prices is going to escalate the issues of agricultural commodity costs in the upcoming years, as stated by AbdulHakim Elwaer, the assistant director general of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

Gas provisions and energy prices are going to impact fertilizer costs and an estimated fertilizer crisis is going to impact the final commodity price, he informed Anadolu throughout the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group's yearly gathering in the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah.

"We have to understand the dynamics and the chronology of the issue and the problem when the war in the Black Sea started," he stated.

Following the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, energy costs, mainly natural gas, rose notably.

And Ukraine, which is a massive grain supplier, started to see hurdles shipping grain outputs and nations that rely on grain shipments have dealt a food deficiency.

After a period of time, those outputs were shipped through the Grain Corridor, started due to hard work by Turkey.
