Qatar, Bahrain Restore Diplomatic Relations in Second Follow-Up Committee Meeting


(MENAFN) The Qatari-Bahraini Follow-up Committee held its second meeting at the headquarters of the GCC in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to discuss the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The delegation of the State of Qatar was headed by Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, HE Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi, while the delegation of the Kingdom of Bahrain was led by Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, HE Sheikh Dr. Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

The meeting discussed the topics on the agenda and reviewed the outcomes of the first meeting of the joint legal committee and the joint security committee. The two sides affirmed their mutual desire to develop bilateral relations and enhance Gulf unity and integration according to the GCC Charter and the principles of equality between states, national sovereignty and independence, territorial integrity, and good neighborliness.

It was also decided to restore diplomatic relations between Qatar and Bahrain according to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the provisions of the Vienna Treaty on Diplomatic Relations of 1961. This decision represents a significant step towards resolving the diplomatic crisis that began in 2017 when Bahrain, along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

The restoration of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Bahrain is a positive development that will promote stability and cooperation in the Gulf region. The decision underscores the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving disputes between nations, and highlights the potential for increased collaboration and mutual benefit between Qatar and Bahrain.
