Putin may attend Turkey’s nuclear plant inauguration

(MENAFN) President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin may attend the inauguration of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, the Akkuyu facility, either in person or via video link on April 27. The plant, which was built in partnership with the Russian state nuclear development agency Rosatom, is considered one of Turkey’s most important investments and is expected to play a crucial role in the country's energy storage capabilities. With four reactors capable of generating 4,800 megawatts, the entire plant is set to go online by 2025, while the first reactor is expected to become operational later this year.

The two leaders recently spoke on the phone to discuss their collaboration on strategic power engineering projects, including the Akkuyu plant and natural gas supplies. They also discussed the recent earthquakes that struck Turkey last month, causing widespread devastation and loss of life. Putin offered assistance to Turkey, including the donation of construction materials and the deployment of Russian rescue personnel and a field hospital in Hatay province. Erdogan expressed his gratitude for Putin's support during a difficult time for the country.

The partnership between Turkey and Russia on the Akkuyu plant highlights the growing cooperation between the two nations, which have been working together on a range of strategic projects in recent years. As Turkey looks to strengthen its energy security and reduce its dependence on foreign sources of energy, its relationship with Russia is likely to become increasingly important. The Akkuyu plant is also expected to create thousands of jobs and boost local infrastructure, further cementing the ties between the two countries.
