Muscat – With an aim to ensure the safety and wellbeing of school students across the country, Oman Shell is introducing a new Road Safety Educational Programme (VIA) to schools in Oman in collaboration with the Royal Oman Police (ROP), Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP).

Following the success of the Shell Road Safety Awards initiative that was implemented in Oman for over a decade, Oman Shell has now launched the Road Safety Educational Programme (VIA) for children aged 10 to 18 with GRSP as the delivery partner.

The enhanced modular VIA programme is designed to be a flexible, accessible, and easily replicable programme with a well-developed curriculum. GRSP will also provide training for teachers and young students to build capacity and improve their skills in road safety. Furthermore, GRSP will also provide bus driver and community training as well.

As part of the VIA programme, Oman Shell is conducting workshops led by GRSP experts for the ROP staff. So far, the VIA road safety programme has been introduced in 4 pilot schools in the Muscat governorate, with an aim to reach 33 more schools across the Sultanate of Oman. Being a comprehensive and effective training module, the programme is enabling the ROP and MoE trainers to provide schools and the local communities with the necessary guidelines for road safety.

Commenting on the impact the new VIA programme is having, Walid Hadi, Oman Shell's Senior VP and Country Chairman said,“With the new VIA programme, children will learn how to identify and initiate actions to improve safety and quality of life for themselves and their local community. Our collaboration with the Ministry of Education, ROP and GRSP is benefiting teachers, students, parents and drivers. By educating them in the proper and safe usage of roads and road related attitude and behavior, we are sure to see the number of road accidents in Oman reduce further. Oman has one of the best road networks in the world, and our aim is to keep these roads safe for all those that use them. The new and improved VIA programme with the support of GRSP experts will not only enhance knowledge for all those involved, but will also equip them with skills and enable them to stay safe.”
