Story of Wooden Timber, Metal Bar that Bears Witness to Horrors of Slavery

(MENAFN) In the basement of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a hunk of wood and metal bar sits in the center of a near pitch-dark room, illuminated by the space’s few rays of light. At first glance, these items may appear insignificant, even mundane. But for many around the world, they represent the horrors of slavery that are all too often relegated to mere abstractions and numbers.

The wooden timber is part of the Sao Jose Paquete D’Africa, a Portuguese slave ship that sank off the coast of South Africa in 1794, near Cape Town. The unassuming metal bar was one of many used as the ship’s ballast, heavy objects loaded onto a boat to offset the weight of cargo. But in this case, the ballast served a darker purpose. It was used to ensure that the weight of enslaved human beings bound to the floor, suffering through a nightmare that would only worsen once the boat reached its destination, did not cause the boat to tilt and sink on the transatlantic voyage.

The Sao Jose was carrying 400 enslaved Africans from Mozambique to Brazil when it sank. Only a handful of survivors made it to shore, but their stories and the artifacts recovered from the wreckage bear witness to the inhumane conditions endured by the captives. The wooden timber and metal bar serve as tangible reminders of the brutal reality of the slave trade, and the suffering that millions of people were forced to endure.

For many, the horrors of slavery remain distant and abstract, relegated to historical textbooks and statistics. But these artifacts provide a tangible connection to the past, reminding us of the human cost of the slave trade, and the enduring legacy of racism and inequality that continues to shape our world today. As we reflect on the past and work towards a more just future, it is important to remember the stories of those who suffered and fought for their freedom, and to honor their memory by continuing the struggle for justice and equality.
