Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated for the tenth week in a row tonight in Tel Aviv and in many other cities against judicial overhaul plans by Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right government that critics say will undermine the judiciary.

Major turnout was reported at protests against the government's efforts to overhaul the judicial system, with Israeli news estimating record turnout in Haifa and Beersheba.

According to the channel 12, around 145,000 people are rallying in Tel Aviv, 50,000 in Haifa and 10,000 in Beersheba.

In Tel Aviv, tens of thousands participated in the central demonstration at Kaplan Street. The demonstrators waved banners and shouted slogans, including 'democracy', and 'a criminal government'.

Demonstrators also blocked major streets and intersections in the northern city of Karmiel.

Netanyahu's judicial overhaul plans have drawn fierce opposition from leftist groups, raising concerns among business leaders, widening already deep political divisions in Israeli society.

Netanyahu has downplayed the protests as a refusal by leftist opponents to accept the results of the last election, which produced one of the most right-wing governments in Israel's history.
