Five People Killed Due To Floods In Southern Malaysia

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 (KUNA) - At least five people were killed due to the floods that struck Johor's southern state of Malaysia and a number of other states, the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia announced earlier on Tuesday.
All the deaths took place in Johor state, the most damaged province from the floods, it added.
The rescue and search teams found five corpses as they passed away due to drowning during the past several days, while they later found a corpse of a woman who passed away inside her vehicle that was drifted by the floods, Mersing Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Assistant Superintendent Abdul Muiz Mukhtar said today.
The height of water floods reached one meter in some areas when the floods struck Johor state by the end of last week, Mukhtar affirmed.
The number of the people affected by the floods raised to more than 53,000 people, as they are currently residing in rescue centers in various parts of the state, Mukhtar said.
These floods are considered the worst in Johor since year 1969, which pushed the government to announce the need for urgent financial support of 50 million ringgit - which is 12 million US dollars, in support of rescue efforts.
This money is meant to meet the needy people displaced from their places due to the floods until their return back t to their homes safely. (end)
