Britain Terms Restrictions On Afghan Women 'Gender Apartheid'
(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The representative of Britain at the UN Human Rights Council criticized the existing situation in Afghanistan and said the restrictions on Afghan women is equal to 'gender apartheid', based on the findings of Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan. Simon Manley, the United Kingdom's representative at the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday at the fifty-second session of the human rights assembly said the restrictions by the Islamic Emirate have imprisoned half of Afghanistan's population in their homes, and the world sees it with open eyes.
Manley further added,“if women defend their freedom and protest on the streets, they will face the risk of persecution and detention by the ruling regime.”
“Currently, having a pleasant and satisfying life in Afghanistan is impossible”, especially for women and girls, the UK representative at the UN Hunan Rights Council says.
The UN Human Rights Council based in Geneva on Monday held a session on Afghanistan, in which Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan presented his findings about the human rights situation in the war-ravaged country.
As per the findings of Bennett, the human rights situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated compared to that of last year and described the Taliban's actions regarding human rights as 'gender apartheid' and a 'crime against humanity'.
In order to ease the pressure and criticism from the international community regarding the gender-based policies barring female students from university education, the Taliban group has termed the ban as“temporary”.
The Afghan interim government is under immense pressure from the international community for violating human rights, women's and girls' rights in particular.
