Macron’s party is facing significant electoral losses amid concerns over “out of control” immigration
(MENAFN) The Times stated that worries over "out of control" immigration are causing big electoral losses for the party of French President Emmanuel Macron.
For a 28.6 percent year-over-year surge in asylum requests, the government's apparent inability to manage immigration has led to important prospective partners pleading with Macron to act quickly. Last year, the top four countries of origin for asylum applicants in France were Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Georgia.
According to recent data, France issued 320,330 residence cards in the last year, an increase from 193,000 a decade earlier.
According to Bruno Retailleau, the head of the Senate's minority Republicans, populism may make a comeback in France as a result of rising unhappiness with immigration numbers.
Given that the president's party lost its majority in the National Assembly during last year's elections, Retailleau's backing is expected to be necessary for Macron to pass a crucial new immigration law in Parliament.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne described the measure as a combination of "firmness and humanity," aiming to allay worries from both the left and right of French politics.
