Napoli moves closer to Scudetto after beating Roma 2-1 on Sunday


(MENAFN) As they approach the long-awaited Scudetto (Italian Serie A championship), league leaders Napoli of Italy managed to grab a 2-1 win versus Roma on Sunday.

Napoli defeated Roma 2-1 to move 13 points clear atop the Serie A league in Italy thanks to a late goal from Giovanni Simeone.

At Naples' Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen of Napoli struck Roma with a hard shot in the 17th minute.

After Nicola Zalewski curled from the right wing to tie the score in the 75th minute, Roma attacker Stephan El Shaarawy scored in the far post.

After receiving a low pass from Piotr Zielinski, Argentine forward Simeone quickly sent the ball to the top corner to score the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.

Thus, Napoli boosted their total points in 20 games to 53.

Their closest rival, Inter Milan in second place, has 40 points after defeating Cremonese 2-1 on Saturday thanks to a brace from Inter's Argentine forward Lautaro Martinez.

With 38 points, Lazio, Atalanta, and AC Milan may overtake Inter.

In a Sunday Serie A encounter played at Milan's home San Siro, Sassuolo shocked AC Milan 5-2. Due to the defeat, AC Milan dropped in the standings.

Roma currently at the 6th spot following the defeat from Napoli.
