As per a RTI Information sought by Jasbir Singh, Chairman, Labour Laws Committee, Mohali Industries Association, the ESIC in the last five year transferred a sum of Rs 888 crore to the state government but did not collect utilization certificate from the state government.

“In Mohali district nearly four lakh workers are contributing Rs 10 crore per month as ESI contribution under ESIC Scheme”, Singh exclusively told KNN.

“The ESI contribution is also charged from the industrial areas where there is no ESI dispensary for medical services as at Gharuan, Sailba Majri, Ban Majra & Sector 82 Mohali and other areas of Punjab”, he said.

Highlighting the plight of workers, Singh told KNN that the quality of medical services at the ESI Hospital/ dispensaries in Mohali District are was very poor.

“Instead of providing proper and timely treatment to the patients brought at the ESI Hospital, they are always referred to Civil Hospital-Phase 6 Mohali, GMCH-32, Govt. Hospital-16 or PGI, Chandigarh where patients/insured persons have to pay for their medical treatment from their own pocket and then have to wait for release of payment of their medical reimbursement's bills for a long period”, he pointed out.

“To secure their due medical benefits under the ESIC workers are forced to visit courts as ESIC is not ready to solve their problems”, said Singh. (KNN Bureau)
