AMMAN - Jordan is among the region's top countries in terms of available grain reserves, according to a Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) official.

FAO representative in Jordan Nabil Assaf, during the launch of a Dead Sea-held training workshop, commended Jordan's efforts to set a national strategy and establish a supreme council for food security.

As the global population is expected to hit 10 billion in 2050, it is necessary to move towards technology, research and innovation, he said, highlighting the growing challenges related to food and energy security.

Titled 'Improving agricultural research meant to development and strengthening institutional linkages among stakeholders of Jordan's national agricultural research systems', the workshop will help improve participants' skills to address these challenges, he added, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Organised by the FAO, the two-day training workshop, featuring 30 participants from the National Centre for Agricultural Research and Technology Transfer, the Directorate of Agricultural Guidance, in addition to representatives from international projects, universities and experts, aims to support development efforts related to research by providing programmes to enhance necessary skills and by holding training courses.
