Russia lays foundation for start of negotiations on security assurances

(MENAFN) For any negotiations on security assurances between Moscow and Washington to begin, the US must cease arming Kiev and accept realities on the ground in Ukraine, according to Alexander Darchiyev, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North America section.

Darchiyev clarified, in an interview with news agency TASS, “Until the pumping of Zelensky’s Regime with weapons and money is stopped, the US and NATO troops/mercenaries/trainers are withdrawn [from Ukraine], and the realities defined by us [Russia] on the ground are recognized, it’s premature to start any meaningful negotiations on security guarantees in connection to Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic region.”

"The ball is now in the court of the United States," he said. During the confrontation with Russia, Washington has been Ukraine's principal supporter, contributing billions of dollars in military and financial help, as well as information. Russia has claimed that the US and NATO are conducting a "proxy war" against it in its neighboring countries.

During his recent visit to the United States, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was told by his American counterpart Joe Biden that "we will be with you for as long as it takes." According to Biden, it was critical for Washington and Kiev to "stand together until 2023."
