Roof collapses at Delhi airport terminal, results in 1 death, flights cancelations

(MENAFN) Early Friday morning in New Delhi, operations came to a standstill at one of the airport terminals following a tragic roof collapse incident amidst overnight rainfall. The collapse, which occurred at Delhi Airport Terminal 1, resulted in one fatality and several injuries, prompting swift rescue efforts by authorities.

The Indian Civil Aviation Ministry acknowledged the incident, expressing regret over the injuries sustained by passengers due to the collapse of the terminal's canopy. Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assured that comprehensive rescue operations were underway.

According to Delhi Airport authorities, heavy rainfall contributed to the collapse of a section of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1. As a precautionary measure, all departures from Terminal 1 were temporarily suspended, with check-in counters promptly closed.

Despite the disruption, scheduled arrivals at Terminal 1 were facilitated until 10:30 a.m. local time, after which all flight operations were redirected to the airport's other two terminals. The incident occurred against the backdrop of ongoing heavy rains in the capital, leading to traffic congestion and localized flooding across several areas.

The situation underscores the challenges posed by inclement weather on critical infrastructure and the swift response required to ensure passenger safety and operational continuity at one of India's busiest airports.
