Canadians are footing bill for Ukraine's gas

(MENAFN) Ukraine has received about $350 million from Canada to stockpile gas for the winter, Ukrainian media reported on Wednesday, quoting Prime Minister Denis Shmigal.

The Canadian government has sent 12.7 billion hryvnia ($344 million) to Ukraine's state-owned gas business Naftogaz, he claimed, adding that “Ukraine earlier received this money from the government of Canada.”  Shmigal further stated that the "procedure for using state budget money for gas procurement in 2022-2023 was supported at today's [government] meeting."

Kiev also received €200 million ($208 million) from Norway this week for the same reason and is expecting another €300 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, according to the Ukrainian prime minister.

The assistance comes as Canadians and European Union people face record energy inflation and a cost-of-living crisis, with many of families unable to pay their energy bills.

Electricity and gas costs in Canada have risen dramatically in recent months. According to energy specialists, residents in the country may anticipate their costs to jump by 50% to 100% on average this winter.
