The musical adaptation of award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair's 2001 hit comedy-drama“Monsoon Wedding” has finally made its debut in Doha.

This is part of Qatar Creates' cultural programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and beyond. Shows will run everyday until November 27 with two additional shows on 23rd and 26th at Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre, Souq Waqif.

Mira Nair said the musical took 12 years to make.“This is a celebration of family, laughter, joy and also of silence and the other side of life. And it is [a story of] family which is such a universal force in all of our lives.”

The celebrated director also expressed her delight that Qatar is hosting the world premiere of her musical.“I love to be in Qatar today because this is a culture and home of many cultures and so is our musical Monsoon Wedding where people have crossed borders, crossed countries to find love, so thank you for this invitation.”

During the red carpet event yesterday, Nair revealed she was invited by H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to have the world premiere of Monsoon Wedding as part of special projects curated for the World Cup.

“In the beautiful collision that is Monsoon Wedding, the bride and the groom meet across oceans, both having their own vision of India and America. At its core, our story is about love. I think of the musical as imbuing four kinds of love: what I call“old shoe love” – the neglected love between the father and mother of the bride that is rekindled again; the love that is arranged but could ignite – the love between the groom and the bride; the nonmaterial, pure love over a flower – of Alice and Dubey, the maid and the tent man. And unfortunately, the twisted love that has never been love at all but has afflicted so many lives,” said the director.

In attendance to yesterday's red carpet premiere were music composer Vishal Bhardwaj; original cast of the Monsoon Wedding movie Lillete Dubey and Tillotama Shom, and acclaimed actress Tabbasum“Tabu” Fathima Hashmi.

The Monsoon Wedding film explored the compelling contrast between tradition and modernity against the backdrop of an increasingly globalised India.

It has won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and received nominations for the Golden Globe and the BAFTA award. It went on to become one of the all-time highest-grossing foreign films.

Tickets cost QR200 and are available at events.qacreates.com. Show is at 5pm to 8pm everyday until November 27, while an added show from 9pm to 11pm on November 23 and 26.
