Iran, Iraq start discussions around extending gas shipment deal
(MENAFN) The chief of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) declared the beginning of discussions with Iraq for extending the gas shipment agreement among the two nations, as reported by Shana.
"Since our first [gas] export contract to Baghdad will expire next year, our negotiations with Iraq regarding the continuation of exports to this country have begun and the first part of the negotiations is regarding the previous contract," Majid Chegeni stated in a televised meeting.
He highlighted the positive performance of his firm in the sector of gas shipment throughout the last year, mentioning that the 13th government since taking office, has been very operative in the sector of energy diplomacy, mainly in gas shipments.
The deputy oil minister for gas affairs mentioned that the Iraqi side has been urging for the extension of the gas shipment deal and Iran has an optimistic outlook around this.
Talking about the improvement of energy ties with bordering nations, Chegeni asserted that “Iraq needs energy, especially gas, and we are trying to meet this need by extending the contract with this country.”
