Musk mocks media for scam involving Twitter layoffs

(MENAFN) Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Twitter, lashed out at the mainstream media after men posing as recently sacked twitter workers duped reporters, with at least two publications falling for the ruse before discreetly amending their reports.

On Friday, the two pranksters were seen loitering around Twitter's San Francisco offices with boxes in hand, introducing themselves to media as 'Rahul Ligma' and 'Daniel Johnson,' while pretending to be newly fired software employees.

While CNBC and Bloomberg first reported the tale as fact, including quoting interviews with the two men, both publications eventually altered their pieces to clarify that 'Ligma' and 'Johnson' were most likely imposters, omitting any direct reference of the hoaxers.

An editor’s note highlighted to CNBC’s article states that while the men claimed to be “fired employees of Twitter,” several reports emerged “suggesting it was a hoax.” It stated it was still unable to confirm the identities of the two individuals. After launching its own version of the story, Bloomberg later outlined that Twitter’s internal communications channels had “lit up with suspicion that the departing people were enacting a hoax and were not in fact laid off.”
