A driver was killed while a child was injured when unknown assailants opened fire on a school van in the Gulibagh area of Charbagh tehsil of Swat district on Monday.

Police said that the van was taking children to school when motorcyclists opened fire on it near the Gulbagh area. Van's driver identified as Hussain Ahmed died at the spot while a child was critically wounded.

The injured child was rushed to Saidu Sharif for treatment. The attackers managed to escape after firing while police was investigating the attack.

The attack has also caused fear and panic among the residents.

On the other hand, locals place the body of the slain driver on Khawazakhlea road and protested against the attack.

However, Swat police said that the van driver was the target of the attack, which was being presented as attack on school children on social media. The police said that they are carrying a search operation in the area. Similarly, police said that they also found a jacket and helmet from the crime scene.

It is pertinent to mention here earlier last week, a duo of father and son was killed in encounter in the Angaro Dheri on Mingora Bypass Road. Counter Terrorism Department there was an encounter between security forces and terrorist wherein two terrorists were killed while four security personnel including a captain identified as Captain Zulfiqar were injured.

However, this incident took a dramatic turn when the CCTV footage of the incident and son of the slain issued a statement.

Waqas Ahmed, a son of the slain, said that his brother and father were not terrorists; rather, they were killed over a monetary dispute. He said that an Afghan, a Punjabi and a local were behind the murders.

He said that his father operated a weight bridge on the bypass road while his brother Awais who worked with a business run by Afghans and Punjabi citizens and had stolen a bank cheque sometimes back. Mr Waqas his brother's employers were threatening them and they had also held a jirga with area elders regarding this issue.

He said that about a week back, armed masked men kidnapped his brother Awais from the weight bridge. On Saturday, they brought his brother in a vehicle to the weight bridge and demanded his father for paying the stolen money and the issue led to the firing after verbal exchange.

Four masked men were injured due to the firing of my father, he said.

He said that they have paid back most of the stolen money and only Rs 12 million was outstanding.

He demanded army chief and Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of this issue and hold transparent probe.

On the other hand, locals in Swat are protesting against the resurgence of militancy and to push for peace in the district. Some days back, locals arranged public meeting in Khawazakhela area of the district and a large number of local elders including leaders of Swat Qaumi Jirga attended the meeting.

The speakers at this occasion said that they will not allow resurgence of militancy in the district at any price.“We will force those out of Swat who want to force out us of district,” they said.

Besides, the speakers said that their protests will continue till the last terrorist was present in Swat. They also demanded for vacate Matta College and Palam School and start academic activities at both premises.

On the other hand, Kabal Bar Association president Sardar Khan Yousafzai during a function arranged by the Swat Bar Association asked the Chief Justice Peshawar High Court to take suo motu notice of resurgence of militancy in the district and form a commission to investigate the issue.

Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan in his speech said that he was aware of worsening law and order situation in the district and the issue has been taken up at highest level.

It is worth mentioning here that Ulusi Pasun has also given call for protest the Nishat Chowk of Mingora against the recent deterioration of the law and order on Tuesday.
