Kaspersky Lab, Gazprombank could be banned by EU

(MENAFN) A new round of anti-Russian penalties that the EU is considering might include Kaspersky Lab, a Russian cybersecurity firm famous for its antivirus software among other things. According to Bloomberg on Friday, Poland, Ireland, and the three Baltic states have requested that Brussels forbid EU countries from using its products.

According to Bloomberg, who cited a document it had access to as well as some persons with knowledge of the situation, the proposal was made as a method for the EU to tighten current limitations on business interactions with Russia in the technology sector. Other recommendations included limiting technology exports to Russia and expanding the export ban on products like data-processing equipment and storage systems.

The five countries have designated Gazprombank, a Russian lender used by EU companies to pay for gas delivery, as a potential target for additional penalties. Due to its involvement in gas transactions, the bank has thus far escaped the majority of the sanctions imposed by the union. Along with certain other Russian banks, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ireland, and Poland now advocate cutting it off from the SWIFT global payment network.
